History of Antandros Ancient City

  The ancient city of Antandros is located on the skirts of the magnificent mountains known as Kaz Mountains. The city, which was estimated to have been established in the 10th century BC, may be an older history as a result of the researches. It is known that the city of Antandros was founded by Pelasgs. According to historians and history books, in this city, where the people of Pelasg lived, Commander Otoneis Antandros became the Western Anatolian rebellion between 499 and 494 BC. At the same time, Kserkeses soldiers, who were going to the Greek campaign, stayed for one night in Antandros. In this night, many Kserkeses soldiers were damaged by lightning and severe storms that fell into the Kaz Mountains. This ancient city was a region where many different people took refuge in the Middle Ages. Especially the peoples who escaped from the Arab campaigns took refuge in Antandros in the current Sahin Kale region.

According to the latest researches, it was said that the acropolis of Antandros was located on the hill called Yarmataş and that the city developed towards the east. In addition, the nekropolis of the city is located two km west of Yarmataş. Necropolis has been found by chance and rescue excavations by archaeologists have been brought to the present day. According to these rescue excavations, it is estimated that necropolis was used in the 7th and 2nd centuries BC. When necropolis is closely examined, it is seen that sloping land is used. In addition, two and three -storey sarcophagi graves were found. Apart from these sarcophagus tombs, many buried areas have emerged to cream, that is, burning and burial in the soil. In fact, the arms and feet bending bone remains were found and no souvenirs were found in these graves. The items coming out of sarcophagus graves are now located in the Balıkesir Museum.
