Prof. Dr. Ahmet Akman, MD, FACS

He is an academician who has 25 years of experience in cataract and glaucoma surgery, has published over 200 articles at national and international level, has published an international book called OCT in Glaucoma, and regularly gives courses on OCT at the American Eye Academy.

After graduating from TED Ankara College in 1985, he received the title of Medical Doctor at Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine in 1991. He completed his Ophthalmology Specialist training from Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Ophthalmology in 1995.

He has been working in Ankara Baskent University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Ophthalmology since its establishment, and received the title of University Associate Professor in 2000 and Professor of Ophthalmology in 2007. He worked on glaucoma at Duke University, North Carolina, USA.

In 2018, he left the Başkent University Faculty of Medicine, where he worked for 23 years, and opened his own practice where he could devote more time to his patients and provide better quality service.

In his 25 years of professional life, he has more than 12000 surgical experiences in cataract and glaucoma surgery with over 200,000 patient examination experience.

Most Notable Academic Achievements

Cataract

• He is a member of the American Cataract and Refractive Surgery Association, and he chairs the sessions of the ASCRS congresses held every year and presents scientific studies.
• Due to his expertise in trifocal lenses called smart lenses and astigmatism corrective lenses called toric lenses, he is frequently invited to national and international meetings as an invited speaker.
• He is one of the specialists who practice the femto laser assisted cataract surgery (FLACS), which is called bladeless cataract surgery, the most in our country. There are many publications and papers on this subject.
• He is an active member of the Cataract and Refractive Surgery Unit of the Turkish Ophthalmology Association.

Glaucoma

• His book “Optical Coherence Tomography in Glaucoma”, which is the first English glaucoma book with a Turkish author, published all over the world, especially in the United States and Europe, was published by Springer publishing house in 2018. “Optical Coherence Tomography in Glaucoma”, which is the first book in the world on this subject, attracted great attention and was sold in international congresses, bookstores and websites, especially Amazon America. This book the result of Prof. Dr. Ahmet Akman’s great effort to represent our country abroad in academic terms.
• In addition to his book, Prof. Dr. Ahmet Akman senior instructor gives the OCT course, which he planned and organized as a senior trainer, at the American Academy Ophthalmology Congress, where 30000 ophthalmologists attend every year, with the aim of increasing the knowledge of participants from all over the world about OCT in glaucoma. This course is the first course in the history of the American Eye Academy congress whose senior instructor is a Turkish. In this two-hour course, Prof. Dr. Ahmet Akman’s team consists of the world’s most important glaucoma and OCT specialists. The course was ranked among the top three most recommended glaucoma courses among 300 courses in the congress by the American Eye Academy in 2018.
• In addition to his book and course, his studies on OCT are supported by Prof. Dr. Ahmet Akman has become a world-renowned academician on OCT in glaucoma.
• Prof. Dr. Ahmet Akman is also a member of the European Glaucoma Society, a member of the World Glaucoma Society, and a member of the Turkish Ophthalmology Society’s Glaucoma Unit Executive Board responsible for International Relations.

Retinal Diseases

• Having worked on retinal diseases in the early years of his career, Prof. Dr. Ahmet Akman is also experienced in medical retinal diseases such as macular degeneration, retinal tears, eye problems of diabetes, and has published many scientific publications.
