Perge Ancient City History

Perge Ancient City is located in the region called Pamphylia. This region covers the area between Konyaaltı, Alanya and the southern part of the Taurus Mountains. People from different cultures and nationalities have lived in this city, whose history dates back to the 2000s BC. For this reason, it was called the city of Perge, which means the land of mixed peoples and tribes. Although there is no definite information, it is said that the city continued its existence during the Hittite Civilization. In fact, historians mention that the city of Perge was called Parha during the Hittite rule. It is also mentioned that it was the most organized city in Anatolia when it was under Roman rule. There are many opinions about who founded the city. One of them argues that the Argos colonies were established after the Trojan War. According to another idea, it was founded by Hellenic colonies who wanted to settle in the south after the Trojan War in 1200 BC. This idea is contained in the inscription of a statue found at the entrance to the city of Perge.

The city, which contains many sculptures, is also a sculpture museum. There is a theater hall with a capacity of 15 thousand spectators. Many artifacts obtained through archaeological studies are exhibited in the Perge Theater Hall in the ancient city. There are not only artistic works but also a stadium in the city. It is known that the stadium, which has a capacity of 12 thousand spectators, was built in the second century BC. The city is also important for Christians. According to what is written in the Bible, St. Paul passed over the Aksu River during his arrival in the city of Perge. For this reason, this river and the city of Perge are considered sacred in the Bible. The entrance fee to the Ancient City of Perge is 50 TL per person. Entry under the age of 18 and over the age of 65 is free. The Museum Card is also valid.
