Eye Color Change

The part that gives color to the eye is the iris. The iris is located behind the cornea, known as the transparent layer of the eye. In the middle of the iris is the pupil. Eye color is formed by pigments in the iris of the eye. Eyes with a large amount of pigment are black-dark brown, eyes with a medium amount of pigment are brown-hazel, eyes with a small amount of pigment are blue-green and colored. The color of the eye and the amount of pigment in the eye are determined by the genetic structure. In other words, eye color is inherited according to the genes of the mother and father.

What Methods Are Used to Change Eye Color?

Today, permanent eye color change is carried out in two ways.

  • Changing Eye Color with Laser: In changing eye color with laser, the pigment cells in the iris are shed with the help of low-energy laser. This method is a dangerous practice and it cannot be predicted exactly what the eye color will be as a result of the procedure. In addition, there are various risks involved in this method. As a result of laser eye color change surgery, eye pressure occurs in half of the patients. This eye pressure is a very serious condition and its treatment is not very easy. In cases where eye pressure is too advanced and cannot be treated, vision loss occurs and this can progress to blindness.
  • Iris Implant Surgery: Today, iris implant surgery is mostly applied in cases where the iris is partially or completely absent due to congenital or trauma, rather than the purpose of color change. In iris implant surgery, a silicone artificial iris is placed in front of the iris, in the area called the anterior chamber. The iris implant surgery method is also rarely used for eye color change. Iris implant surgery also carries various risks. In patients who underwent iris implant surgery, eye pressure and loss of cells in the cornea, known as the transparent part of the eye, occurred.
  • Femtosecond Method: It is suggested that this newly developed technique has less risk than other eye color changing procedures. This method is performed without entering the inside of the eye, the iris tissues. It is performed with a device called femosanti, which was previously used in the treatment of visual disorders and cataracts. With the help of this device, ring-shaped pigments are placed into the corneal tissue and thus the eye color is changed. Since this method is performed without entering the tissues inside the eye, it does not cause eye pressure and cell loss in the cornea.

How Does the Treatment Process Work in Eye Color Change?

Iris implant surgeries are performed with a small incision from the cornea. With the help of this incision, the artificial iris is placed inside the eye, in front of the iris. Thus, when viewed from the outside, the artificial iris appears and the eye color changes.

To Whom Can Eye Color Change Be Applied?

Eye color change is suitable for patients who want to change their eye color and do not have problems such as eye pressure and dry eye. Permanent eye color change operations are rarely practiced today, as they are not FDA-approved and have various risks.
