History

  The oldest known history of Ankara Castle dates back to the second centuries BC. It is known that Galatians lived in the castle in those centuries. After a certain time, the Romans captured the castle and the city developed further with the domination of the Romans and the people began to settle outside the castle. The castle, which was restored many times by the Romans, later passed under Byzantine rule. The Byzantines also made additions to the castle, increased the height of the towers and repaired the parts damaged in the war. In the following periods, the castle also came under Seljuk and Ottoman rule and had to be restored from time to time. This old and unique structure has survived to the present day in this way.

  The castle is 110 meters high. The castle itself is divided into two. The castle, which surrounds the old Ankara and consists of 20 towers, is known as the Outer Castle. The castle on the inside of the Outer Castle is called the Inner Castle, as you might guess. The Inner Castle, consisting of 42 towers in total, is located on an area of 43000 square meters. Located in the Inner Castle, Akkale is the highest point of the castle. Consisting of four floors, each floor of the Citadel was built using a special stone known as the Mainland Stone. In addition, there are two large gates in the Inner Castle. These are called the Hisar Gate and the Outer Gate. There are inscriptions from the Ilkhanate period on the upper parts of the doors. The Outer Castle and the Inner Castle meet at the part facing the Hatip Stream.

  There are two or three storey houses belonging to various periods and nations in Ankara Castle. The architecture of the houses gives visitors an unforgettable experience.
